Shane Sutherland expects Greenock Morton’s players to be able to put the club’s off-field issues to one side when Inverness Caledonian Thistle come calling on Saturday

The Cappielow club hit the headlines last week as one of the outfits struggling most in the Championship with their finances, having played the entire season in an empty stadium so far under pandemic conditions.

While news at the end of last week that a government grant worth £500,000 will be given to each Championship club will have been very welcome – for both Morton and Caley Thistle – it would not have been a surprise if the uncertainty behind the scenes affected players on the pitch.

That was not the case last weekend though, as the ‘Ton saw off struggling Queen of the South in Greenock – and Sutherland expects a similar level of performance from them when Caley Thistle travel south on Saturday.

“The only thing they will be thinking about is that they got a good result against Queen of the South,” Sutherland insisted.

“They’re above us in the table now, so we’ve got to think about ourselves and try and rectify the problems we had at Alloa.

“The things we didn’t do last week, we have to make sure we do them, and the things we did do we have to do better.

“It’s a difficult place to go, but all the focus will be on that and trying to get three points.”

Although it is still early in the season, teams are already jostling for position in the league table.

“You want to be up there,” Sutherland added.

“Dunfermline drew last week, Ayr got beat at Arbroath, so the teams above us dropped points, so we let ourselves down.

“When you see the results went in our favour it’s disappointing, but the most important thing is we got beat. We let ourselves down, and we’ll work hard to rectify it this week.”
