Billy Mckay equalled Caley Thistle's goalscoring record of 101 goals, but his team's hopes of progressing from the group stage of the Viaplay Cup took a blow when they suffered a shock defeat at Dumbarton.

Ryan Wallace gave Dumbarton the lead in the first half before Tony Wallace doubled their advantage early in the second half.

Mckay pulled one back for Inverness with 14 minutes remaining to equal Dennis Wyness' record of 101 goals, but the League Two outfit held on for victory.

It looked to be a promising night for Inverness when Billy Mckay thought he matched the club goalscoring record early on when he found the net from eight yards out. But the referee ruled the goalkeeper was impeded in run up to the goal by Wallace Duffy.

Wallace Duffy appeared to head the ball away from danger. But Ryan Wallace unleashed a volley from edge of the box which beat Mark Ridgers to give the hosts the lead.

Inverness pressed for an equaliser before half time with Austin Samuels having a few shots on target, but all were saved by Harry Broun as the hosts went into the break in the lead.

At the start of the second half, David Carson was denied by the crossbar as he got on the end of Nathan Shaw's cross and beat the goalkeeper, but came flying back at him.

But Dumbarton doubled their advantage in the 50th minute as Tony Wallace beat the Inverness defence in the air to nod home at the near post to make it 2-0.

Inverness persevered to get themselves back in the game, but the crossbar denied them again. This time Nathan Shaw's free kick finding the diving header of Wallace Duffy which beat the goalkeeper, but smacked against the woodwork.

Mckay did match the goalscoring record with 14 minutes remaining when he fired a powerful volley which crashed underneath the crossbar and crossed the line before bouncing out of the goalmouth.

But they were unable to find an equaliser as Dumbarton held on for all three points.

Elsewhere Dundee beat Bonnyrigg Rose to get their campaign off to a winning start.
