He won the PGA EuroPro Tour event at Wychwood Golf Club, Crewe, taking home a cheque for £10,000, to see his efforts finally rewarded.

After several unsuccessful attempts to gain a European Tour card and not making much of a living on the Scottish Tartan Tour, Stewart all but gave up playing.

“I did not play at all last year," he said. "I'd had enough, but decided to give it one more go this year”

That turned out to be one of the his best decisions of his life when he produced a final round of seven under par 65 for a winning nine under par total of 207 to claim the victory.

“It was the best day of my pro career so far and my final round is up there among the best of my life," said Stewart, who played amateur golf for Scotland's boys teams and won the North District Championship in both 2006 and again the following year.

Languishing in 63rd place on the tour order of merit with just earnings of £812 before this win, Stewart is now in the top 10. If he can go on and secure a top five finish when the season ends, he would advance to the Challenge Tour, which is one step away from the main European Tour.
