The 40-year-old had been assistant to former managers Derek Adams and Malky Mackay, and had been on the coaching staff under John Hughes and Stuart Kettlewell.

As a player, he had come through the youth system at the club and went on to ply his trade in the English Premier League for Cardiff City, as well as winning 10 caps for Scotland.

In his time south of the border, he worked under names such as Brendan Rodgers, Sean Dyche and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Cowie will face the media as interim boss for the first time on Monday ahead of County's trip to Glasgow to face Rangers next Wednesday evening.
