ROSS County boss Derek Adams fielded six trialists on Saturday as Highland League hosts Wick Academy beat them 2-1 in their pre-season opener.

In the Staggies’ first summer outing, half a dozen players from England, Belgium, Holland, Italy and France were handed their chance to shine, although Adams remained tight-lipped about who they were.

County started well and Melvin de Leeuw and Rocco Quinn went close with early chances.

County’s entire back four was made up of trialists and one of them tripped Davie Allan on 26 minutes to concede a penalty which Richard Macadie fired into the net.

However, the Victoria Park side were soon level when another of their trialists pounced to score after Wick failed to clear their lines.

One of County’s new forwards, Jake Jervis, almost headed his team in front on 65 minutes, but his effort came back off the crossbar.

Wick secured their surprise victory eight minutes later when substitute Gary Weir nodded home the winner from a Stevie Cunningham cross.
