Shinty season set to swing in action on Saturday

THE 2023 shinty season is set to swing into action tomorrow afternoon as clubs in the Premiership and National Division along with North Division One and North Division Two begin their campaigns.

Lovat will start their Premiership campaign in Strathpeffer tomorrow when they take on Caberfeidh at Castle Leod.

Jamie Matheson has stayed on as manager of the club as he looks to improve on a disappointing campaign in 2022 when they finished the season trophyless after having high hopes.

Lovat finished last season in fourth place in the Premiership, 11 points behind champions Kingussie.

The Kiltarlity club did reach the Camanachd Cup final, but lost 3–1 to Kingussie who won the grand slam of trophies last season after a dominant campaign.

Newly promoted Beauly, who are playing in the top flight for the first time in their history, do not start their campaign until next weekend.

Their first match in the Premiership will be a home clash against Kinlochshiel at Braeview on Saturday, March 11 at 2.30pm.

Champions Kingussie have a free weekend.

Elsewhere in the Premiership tomorrow, Kinlochshiel are set to take on Skye at Reraig, Glasgow Mid-Argyll face Kyles Athletic at Yoker with Oban Camanachd taking on Newtonmore at Mossfield Park.

In the National Division, Drumnadrochit outfit Glenurquhart begin their bid to return to the top flight when they head to Fort William tomorrow.

Strathglass will be looking to get their campaign off to a successful start tomorrow when they take on Kilmallie in Cannich.

Glenurquhart and Strathglass warmed up of the new season last weekend when they faced each other in the Ali Bhan Cup and MacDonald Cup. Glenurquhart won both matches 11-0 and 2–0 respectively.

Elsewhere Inveraray face Lochaber at Winterton and newly promoted Col Glen welcome Oban Celtic to Glendaruel.

In North Division One, Inverness travel to Lovat Reserves with Glengarry on the road to Newtonmore.

Glenurquhart welcome Fort William to Blairbeg Park and Skye take on Kinlochshiel in Portree.

In North Division Two, Boleskine head to Aberdeen University, Inverness take on Caberfeidh and Strathglass are set to travel to Kilmallie.
