SHINTY: Lovat spot on as Beauly made to pay the penalties in the Macaulay Cup

LOVAT held their nerve to defeat Beauly on penalties to progress past the first round of the Macaulay Cup at Braeview.

The teams couldn’t be separated at full time with the score at 1-1.

Goalkeeper Stuart Macdonald was the hero for Lovat, as he saved three penalties as the Kiltarlity club came out 3-1 winners in the shoot-out.

Greg Matheson gave Lovat the lead, but Beauly equalised in the second half through David Maclean.

Lovat will now face Kinlochshiel in the quarter finals after they defeated Strathpeffer outfit Caberfeidh 4-1 at Balmacara.

Caberfeidh did take the lead after 20 minutes through Kyle Grant, but Finlay MacRae equalised four minutes from half time to make it 1-1 at the break.

MacRae put Kinlochshiel in front six minutes after the interval, with goals from Zander MacRae and Archie MacRae securing victory for the Wester Ross outfit.

Holders Kingussie had to come from behind to defeat Skye 4-2 in Portree.

Skye took a shock 2-0 lead after 25 minutes with goals from Ruaraidh MacLeod and a Ross Gordon penalty.

But Kingussie pulled one back before half time from Lee Bain, who went on to claim his hat-trick in the second half before Savio Genini killed off the game 10 minutes from time.

They now face a titanic clash at Newtonmore in the quarter finals, after they defeated National Division outfit Fort William 4-0.

Aaron MacBean scored after eight minutes, with Craig MacIsaac scoring twice and Iain Robinson also finding the net.

In the other first round matches, Kyles Athletic hammered Aberdour 6-0 to set up a quarter final clash at Glasgow Mid-Argyll, who received a walkover after Oban Celtic couldn’t field a team.

Oban Camanachd defeated Bute 5-0 and will now face Inveraray who defeated Col Glen 2-0.

In the National Division, Strathglass continued their terrible season as they lost 3-0 at Lochaber and are rooted to the bottom of the table having lost every game this season.

They are three points off Oban Celtic in seventh.

In North Division One, leaders Glengarry were held to a 1-1 draw at Inverness.

Shaun Nicolson gave Glengarry the lead after 13 minutes, but Ewen Campbell equalised for Inverness four minutes from time.

In the Strathdearn Cup, Lovat defeated Kingussie 3-2 at Balgate.

They came from 2-0 down to win thanks to Euan Ferguson’s double and a strike from Seb Monkman.

Newtonmore beat Glenurquhart 3-1, Skye defeated Beauly 3-2 and Aberdeen University beat Kilmallie 2-0.
