Beauly player Finlay MacLennan has been named captain of the Scotland Under-17’s squad for the club’s tour of Ireland which takes place this week.

The annual tour, which has been taking place for over 20 years, sees the country’s elite shinty players play shinty/hurling challenge matches against their Irish counterparts, this year from Kildare and Kilkenny.

MacLennan said it was a huge honour to be named captain of his country as they faced Kildare last night and Kilkenny tonight.

“I am buzzing to be captaining Scotland for this year’s U17 International.

I was part of the squad last year and the experience was unforgettable, but to lead the team out is that much more special.”

Maclennan was named the under-17 Player of the Year last season after captaining Beauly to MacTavish Juvenile Success and was also the recipient of the Sandy MacKay Man of the Match Medal.

He has scored four goals this season for Beauly as they make their debut in the Premiership after winning promotion last season.

Maclennan is one of six Beauly players who are in the Scotland squad with Iain Hunter from Inverness Shinty Club also being selected.
