Duncan Ferguson has confirmed that the signing of Ireland international Cillian Sheridan means Caley Thistle will likely not offer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, often known as JET, a permanent contract.

Former Dundee man Sheridan signed a short-term deal until January yesterday afternoon while JET was still on trial.

With the profile of a target man now acquired, Ferguson admits it is unlikely JET 's stay in the Highland capital will be extended – although he did speak highly of the former Aberdeen and Livingston man's efforts.

"We haven't made a final decision on JET, but right now I'd have to say it's unlikely we'll sign him," Ferguson explained.

"Cillian fits that profile we were looking at.

"JET did quite well in training, he's an honest kid and I liked him, but Cillian for me was just a wee bit fitter.

"We need to get these guys on the pitch if we're bringing them in. We can't wait for five or six weeks, and Cillian will be in the squad for Saturday."

Sheridan will go straight into Caley Thistle's squad to face Airdrieonians this weekend, and Ferguson feels the latest addition to his squad will offer up something different to anyone else at his disposal.

"He's a big striker, just what we were looking for, and he's a good character," Ferguson said of Sheridan's abilities.

"We done our homework on him and spoke to a lot of people in the game.

"He's not played a lot of games – I think his last game was in February – but his profile fits this club.

"Cillian has the experience and stature. He offers something different, he can hold the ball up, bring people into play and chip in with a few goals, and he comes in with a good pedigree.

"We've obviously got Harry (Lodovica), who's young and a wee bit raw. We like Harry and he'll get game time, but we wanted a wee bit of experience and someone who could get us up the pitch.

"We think Cillian can do that. He's a good presence, and he gives us a different option to Billy (Mckay). That's why I brought him in really."
