Inverness Caledonian Thistle put on a brave performance against Celtic, but were unable to cause an upset in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden.

Kyogo Furuhashi's first half strike put Celtic on their way to winning the cup and their record breaking eighth treble.

Liel Abada doubled Celtic advantage midway through the second half as they game looked beyond Caley Thistle's reach.

But Daniel MacKay offered Inverness some hope seven minutes from time when he found Wallace Duffy's cross with a diving header to score from close range.

But Jota's goal in injury time secured Celtic a 3-1 victory.

Inverness were looking to replicate their Scottish Cup winning success of 2015 when they defeated Falkirk 2-1.

Celtic dominated possession in the first 15 minutes of the match with Reo Hatate dictating the order of play.

But Caley Thistle 's defence was rarely tested at the beginning as they enjoyed a comfortable opening period of the game.

Inverness attempted to surge up the field at times, with Duffy impressing and maintaining possession, but found the league champions a tough nut to crack.

The first shot on target didn't come until 10 minutes before half time, when a half hearted effort from Matt O'Riley was comfortably caught by Mark Ridgers.

But Celtic broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when O'Riley charged into the box and his low cross met Furuhashi unchallenged to fire into the top left corner from six-yards out.

The Japanese forward came close to doubling their advantage minutes later when a pass from midfield cut through the Inverness defence, but he shot wide of the right post.

Inverness pressed for an equaliser before half time, with Jay Henderson enjoying space on the left wing and charging upfield.

But his crosses into the box were packed with power rather than accuracy as they went too far for anyone to reach.

Inverness started brightly in the second half with Duffy causing the Celtic defence problems again.

His cross into the box almost found Nathan Shaw at the edge of the six-yard box, but he was unable to connect as the ball was cleared.

Celtic doubled their advantage midway through the second half when Abada connected with a cross from Callum MacGregor to fire into the net from close range.

Inverness pulled one back seven minutes from time when an outstanding cross from Duffy found a diving header from MacKay who nodded past Joe Hart.

Celtic responded when Mark Ridgers had to produce a great save to deny Sead Haksabanovic shot finding the net.

But Celtic killed the game off in injury time as Jota found the net to win the Scottish Cup.
