STUART Watson says Highland have the most dominant pack in National One and will be key for the club’s title challenge this season.

The tighthead prop says their early season form has shown they are capable of winning the league and earning promotion to the Premiership.

Highland return home to Canal Park on Saturday to face Glasgow High Kelvinside as they look to bounce back after a 38-14 defeat at Glasgow Hutchesons Aloysians last week.

It was their first defeat of the campaign after impressing in bonus point victories over Dundee and Watsonians in their opening matches.

Electrician Watson (28) says despite last week’s loss, their emphatic victories in the first two weeks shows Highland have what it takes to finish top at the end of the season.

And rating the squad’s pack as the best in the division, he believes they will play a huge part in any success they achieve.

“Our scrum is probably the most dominant in the league,” said Watson.

“That is something that we want to keep up through the entire season. We showed in our first three games that we have a dominant scrum and maul and the forwards are firing right now.

“They will be important in the team looking for promotion, as that is what everyone is aiming for.”

Watson, who has been at Highland for 11 years, is pleased that the club have started well in the division, especially with their 41-0 win over Watsonians where he scored a try and kept their opponents pointless.

But he says the squad know they have to improve from last week’s defeat to GHA.

“We have learned from last week’s loss and will make sure that it does not happen again,” he said.

“We have a really good team this season and there is a really good mood in training right now.

“The side believe that we can actually do it.

“There won’t be any easy games this season, but everyone is really focussed and know our roles.”
