ROSS County drew 0-0 away to Rangers in the Ladbrokes Premiership today (Saturday).
This was the Dingwall club's first visit to Ibrox and it was also the first league encounter between the teams.
They had met three times in cup competitions, with the Light Blues winning them all at Victoria Park.
The last contest was back in November 2001 when goals from Shota Arvaladze and Claudia Reyna clinched a League Cup quarter-final tie, with Steven Mackay's late goal being a consolation in a 2-1 defeat.
That season, Rangers won the Scottish Cup and League Cup and were runners-up to Celtic in the Premier League. County finished fourth in Division One in 2001-02 and much has changed over the past 15 years.
Rangers' financial troubles saw them dip down to League Two as punishment and they are now back in the top-flight as Championship winners and are finding their feet.
This fixture comes on the back of a crazy week for Rangers. Fresh from losing last week's 5-1 Old Firm defeat at Celtic Park, they were plunged into controversy when big name summer signing Joey Barton was banished from the training ground after an alleged bust-up and was therefore missing from the line-up this afternoon.
There were five changes overall for the hosts, with Clint Hill, Danny Wilson, Andy Halliday, Jason Holt and Martyn Waghorn all handed starts.
Fourth-placed County came into this Glasgow trip on the back of a 1-1 draw against Motherwell and knew a victory would see them leapfrog the Gers ahead of next weekend's away day at Tynecastle.
There was a real sense of anticipation from the visitors, with three buses filled and the chairman Roy MacGregor and manager Jim McIntyre in upbeat mood ahead of kick-off in sun-kissed Glasgow.
Defender Jay McEveley was suspended for this one following his red card a week ago, Premiership player of the month Liam Boyce, who suffered a back spasm on Friday, and Erik Cikos dropped to the bench.
In came Marcus Fraser and Kenny van der Weg.
Rangers began with a high tempo and they had the ball in the net in the third minute through Josh Windass, but it was offside.
Nonethelss, it had the home fans on their feet just moments after the teams were led on to the field by members of the armed forces to celebrate the contribution from the forces.
It looked like Windass was about to score a cracker just after that when he went on a surging run and, after rounding keeper Scott Fox, his shot was cleared off the line by Andrew Davies.
Rangers were in the mood and Joe Garner had the confidence to go for goal after 14 minutes, but flashed his shot high over the crossbar from 25 yards.
County's first glimpse of goal came on 27 minutes when Martin Woods flighted a free-kick into the box and Schalk's shot was gathered by Wed Foderingham after Davies knocked it on to him.
At the other end, Windass again looked to make the difference and he saw his powerful drive deflected past the post for a corner, which was defended by the Staggies.
Then it took van der Weg blocking a net-bound James Tavernier effort at the back post on 32 minutes to still keep the scoreline blank, all stemming from a Lee Wallace cross.
Woods then passed the ball straight to Holt and he fed it on to Windass and his long-range shot was off target.
Rangers were on top in the early stages of the second half, but County were standing firm against their pressure without finding early openings of their own.
On 56 minutes, it was Fox to the rescue when he superbly turned wide a swerving shot from Waghorn.
From that flag kick from Barrie McKay, Clint Hill's header was heading for the net, but Woods was on hand to clear it off the line as Gers knocked at the door.
Sub Michael O'Halloran was on the park less than a minute when he guided a headed off the bar when he met a sweeping ball into the box from Windass.
County were rarely getting an opportunity to attack in the second half but Schalk drew a save from Foderingham after being lined up by substitute Tim Chow, who had just replaced Franks.
Fox was again the wall keeping Rangers out on 76 minutes when he saved a point-blank effort from Hill from a McKay corner.
The hosts ran out of ideas in the closing stages and County departed with a point for their efforts.
