Ross County interim manager Don Cowie has tipped goalkeeper George Wickens to bounce back strongly after a costly error against Hibernian last Saturday.

Wickens spilled a cross from Dylan Vente into the path of Myziane Maolida, who duly found the net to put Hibs ahead.

Although the Staggies did create a couple of chances to score themselves, they could not find a way past David Marshall and Dylan Levitt would seal the points for the home side at Easter Road with a cool finish into the bottom corner.

Afterwards, Cowie admitted that the game turned on the mistake from their loanee from Fulham, but refused to be too critical of a player who has generally been an assured presence in goal since joining in January.

“The game swings on an error from our goalkeeper,” Cowie said.

“I don’t want to be too critical of him because he has been very good for us since he came to the club, but we had enough time to try and rectify that error and we didn’t manage to do that.

“It’s part of football. He’s new, and it’s the early part of his career so these are things that are going to happen.

“We all know that with the position he plays in, mistakes can happen.

“I’ve got every confidence that he will bounce back from it.”

With the Scottish Cup returning this coming weekend, County now have a free week before hosting a return match against Hibernian next Wednesday evening.

Cowie would love to go on the front foot more often in front of a home crowd in Dingwall, and he says that is what the Staggies will be working on in the meantime.

“The plan is to focus on the things that we did well, and also things that we can improve on going into the game,” he added.

“Hibs are a very good team with some very good attacking players, and I thought we kept them quiet for the majority of the game. That was something that was a positive for us, but now for me it’s about looking at how we can hurt them.”

Simon Murray is expected to return after missing the trip to Edinburgh through illness.
