LOCHABER slipped to a 3-2 home Orion Group Premiership loss against Kinlochshiel at the weekend, leaving them still in the relegation zone.

Gordie MacDonald’s double for Shiel fired them 2-0 in front, but Shaun Nicolson halved the defivit just after the break.

John MacRae added a third goal for the visitors and Lochaber’s second goal didn’t arrive until the final minute when Ben Delaney tucked away a spot kick.

Cameron admits the performance fell well below what he and the coaches expect from this squad.

He said: "Saturday was a missed opportunity for us. We had planned to get out of the traps early and take the game to Kinlochshiel, but the first half never happened for us. Our basics just weren’t there and the players know that standard is not acceptable for our club.

"In the second half, we did the things which our team should be doing and were a real handful for Shiel, but we should be performing well from the start of games and not needing to react at half-time.

"Going forward, we need to be mentally tough and have a real belief in each other. There’s no doubt we can stay up and, with plenty of shinty still to be played, it’s now time to roll the sleeves up and fight for each other."

Cameron was last week handed the role of senior team boss on a permanent basis after impressing on a caretaker basis since the start of the season.

He said: "I’m thoroughly delighted to be given the opportunity to manage Lochaber’s first-team and will work hard to repay the faith the committee has shown in me. We have a squad who are desperate to do well for our supporters and I look forward to the rest of the season."

A specially arranged Brae Lochaber side were 4-1 winners against Badenoch in Newtonmore at the weekend – 124 years after the original match took place.

Bossed by Michael Delaney, Lochaber entertained the crowd of more than 500 fans in the re-enactment of the original 1889 contest.

Players donned traditional "costumes" and the winners enjoyed a dram or two of Dalwhinnie whisky, which they were presented with at full-time.

Current Lochaber players starred for the Brae Lochaber team, while Badenoch consisted of players from Kingussie and Newtonmore.
