Record entry for Inverness Fours/Quads and Small Boats Heads Regatta

FIREFIGHTER Laura Evans-Smith doused the opposition to win gold for the host club amid a record entry at Inverness Rowing Club’s annual regatta.

Partnered for the first time by club-mate Sara Brennan, an Elgin physiotherapist, the two masters’ category competitors swept to success in the women’s restricted two double sculls event.

Triumphing among a field of 14, the pair recorded a winning time of 19 minutes 16.2 seconds across 4500 metres from Dochgarroch to the club boathouse near Tomnahurich.

In sunny, cold and almost windless conditions, a record total of more than
550 crews from all over Scotland took part in various categories of the Inverness Fours/Quads and Small Boats Heads on Saturday and Sunday. All crews raced over the full length course with the exception of novice and junior 14/15 crews, who completed a which raced over a 3500 metres distance.

Edinburgh University Boating Club, classified as a sub-division of GB Rowing, featured athletes of national and international status and won the most events overall to collect the Victor Ludorm prize and traditional mounted set of antlers.

In the fours/quads events, the fastest men’s crew of the weekend was Edinburgh University BC open quad scull (James Temple) in a time of 14 minutes 49.37 seconds. The fastest women’s crew was the Edinburgh University BC open quad scull (Jane Hardie) in a time of 16 minutes 49.02 seconds.

Club president Roy Sinclair said: “We saw some exceptional racing.”
