Inverness Caledonian Thistle have dropped to the bottom of the Scottish Championship and are still looking for their first point of the season after losing at Airdrieonians.

An own goal after 33 seconds from Cameron Harper, followed by Calum MacGregor's strike gave Airdreonians a two-goal advantage at half time.

Nathan Shaw pulled one back for Inverness midway through the second half but were unable to find an equaliser as the hosts held on.

Arbroath's 3-0 victory at Greenock Morton means Inverness are three points adrift at the foot of the table, having lost all three league games against Queen's Park, Ayr United and Airdrieonians.

It follows three defeats in the League Cup group stages against Dumbarton, Airdrieonians and Dundee, with their only competitive victory coming in their first League Cup group stage match against Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic.

The deadlock was broken after on 33 seconds when Lewis McGregor charged down the right wing and his cross found Gabby McGill. His shot was then diverted by Harper into his own goal to get Inverness off to the worst possible start.

The Diamonds then doubled their advantage 12 minutes before half time when Danny Devine failed to clear a cross and the ball fell kindly to Calum Gallagher who unchallenged fired the ball into the net from 12 yards.

Inverness could have pulled one back before half time when Keith Bray's cross into the box found Austin Samuels who from 12 yards out hit the crossbar.

The visitors were given hope and a man advantage in the early stages of the second half when Airdrie captain Adam Frizzell was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for scything down Keith Bray.

Shaw reduced the deficit to one with 19 minutes remaining, when he was the first to react to Luis Longstaff's shot hitting the right post and tapped home the rebound from close range.

Shaw went close to finding the equaliser in the closing stages when his shot from the edge of the box whistled inches past the right post.

But time ran out for Inverness as they now have to find a way of lifting themselves off the bottom of the table when they host Dunfermline Athletic next week.
