Harry Paton is looking forward to finally being able to show what he can bring to his national team.

The Ross County midfielder has been named in Canada’s 23-man squad for the Gold Cup – the North American equivalent of the European Championships.

He had previously played for the Canadian under-17s and under-20s, and has been on the cusp of the senior men’s squad for the last couple of years.

It looked like his dream may finally become a reality when he was named in the preliminary 60-man squad last month, before being confirmed for the tournament which starts this weekend.

“It’s a proud moment for me and for my family,” the 23-year-old said.

“It’s something I’ve looked forward to and have been working towards my whole life, so to finally get the call up is an amazing feeling.

“I can’t wait to get the red shirt on for the Gold Cup and show everybody in Canada what I can bring to the team.

“We’re one of the favourites to go and win that tournament, we’ve got a very strong side, and I’m looking forward to it.

“In the past couple of years I’ve been around the squad, I’ve been unlucky not to get in. This is finally my chance, and hopefully they let me show what I can do.”

Canada have been drawn in a group with the United States, and both teams will expect to qualify.

If they do, Paton will miss the entirety of Ross County’s Betfred Cup group campaign, and if Canada make it to the final he will miss the first Premiership match too.

When it comes to the Staggies’ prospects in the league, though, Paton wants to aim high.

“We should be looking to get into the top six, I don’t think that’s out of the question for us,” Paton insisted.

“I think we can definitely push on and do it. Each week will be a tough game like it always is, but I’m looking forward to it.

“I don’t think anyone should underestimate us. We left it to the last day to stay up last year, but we’ve definitely got strong players and I’m sure the gaffer will still be looking to strengthen, so there are good things to come for us.”
