GEORGE Oakley says there were many reasons why he had to leave Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The 27-year-old signed an 18-month-deal with Greenock Morton on Monday, three days after his departure from Inverness was confirmed.

Oakley only returned to Inverness in the summer, after previously playing for the club between 2017 and 2019.

He made 18 appearances in the Championship, but only found the net once in the league this season, in the 4-1 defeat at Partick Thistle.

He also scored twice in the Scottish Challenge Cup against Brechin City and against Kelty Hearts in the opening game of the League Cup group stage.

Oakley says there were a number of reasons why he moved on from Inverness.

But he is focussed on looking forward with Greenock Morton and re-uniting with manager Dougie Imrie who he was with at Hamilton.

Speaking on Greenock Morton social media, he said: "There was many reasons why I had to leave, that is another story for another day.

"But I am glad there is interest straight away and to play under a manager like Dougie, it was straight away yes.

"It is a great club, they have been doing well and I want to be part of it.

"I have played with Dougie, he coached me for six months, the opportunity came across and there is no way I would turn it down or let it go, I wanted to be here."

Greenock Morton are in fifth place in the Championship, three points off the play-off zone.

They have beaten Caley Thistle in both matches this season, a 1-0 win at the Caledonian Stadium followed by thrashing them 4-0 at Cappielow.

Greenock Morton have not been in the top flight of Scottish football since 1988 and Oakley says he wants to help fire them to success.

He said: "I want to do everything I can to help this club where they want to be and for me personally, enjoying football.

"I have a hard time over the past two years and I want somewhere to call home.

"When I enjoy my football that is what I do my best. I enjoy Scotland and to get the opportunity to play under a manager I know and play for a team that is good. It will be nice to settle and enjoy football again."
