For the second consecutive year, Northern Counties have secured the North of Scotland Senior League title without playing.

In 2022, an impressive campaign ended up being decided by results elsewhere while the Meeting Park outfit was idle.

This time around, it had looked as if Counties would get the chance to clinch silverware on their home turf with Nairn County due to visit the Highland capital tomorrow.

However, Nairn have withdrawn from the match, forfeiting the points to Northern Counties – giving them an unassailable lead at the top of the table without bowling a ball.

"Tomorrow's game has been conceded by Nairn CC," Northern Counties posted on Facebook.

"Sorry to those of you who were planning on coming down. However, it does mean that Northern Counties Cricket Club are the NoSCA Senior League Champions for 2023.

"Well done to every player that made themselves available, whether it was for one game or every game. It has been a squad effort."

This weekend will still see some cricket action take place, though, as Highland travel to Forres St Lawrence – who will now be looking to secure the runners-up spot in the league.

Elgin are also due to host Ross County.

The newly crowned champions still have something to play for in the league, too, as they are due to host Forres in their final league match of 2023 on September 2, where a win would see them complete a perfect season.
