CALEY Thistle have turned down the chance to bring John Rankin back to the club.

The Highland News understands that Rankin was offered to the club after his Dundee United contract ran out but the Caley Jags declined to make an offer.

It could have meant a return to the Highlands for Rankin, who played for Caley Thistle from 2006 to 2008, joining them after a three-year spell with Ross County. The Staggies were also reportedly offered Rankin’s services and he was again turned down.

The 32-year-old was signed by Charlie Christie during his spell in charge of Caley Thistle and scored a famous last-minute winner against Rangers in 2006. He left in January 2008 for Hibs before going on to United, where he suffered relegation last season.

New Inverness boss Richie Foran has made two signings so far, striker Scott Boden and pacy winger Jake Mulraney, and is targeting further signings ahead of his first competitive game against Cowdenbeath in the Scottish Cup on July 16.

Caley Thistle start their league campaign on August 6 away to Partick Thistle and host County a week later. They will travel to Dingwall on New Year’s Eve and play the final home derby of the campaign on March 18.
