Newsom honoured to run for his nation

JOHN Newsom says representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Half Marathon in Cardiff will be the biggest honour in his senior athletics career.

The Inverness Harrier will be competing in a top class international field in the Welsh capital on Sunday.

The 33-year-old from Nairn was called up to the Scotland squad after achieving a qualifying time of 68:51 at the Inverness Half Marathon in March.

It is the first time in six years Newsom has been selected to represent Scotland and he says it will be a proud moment to compete in the national jersey.

"As a senior athlete this is probably the biggest honour that I have ever achieved so it is the most significant race in my career," he said.
