THE independents title is the target for Dave Newsham after he committed his future to the Speedworks team for the 2013 British Touring Car Championship season.

After a successful campaign this year with Team ES Racing in their S2000-spec Vauxhall Vectra, which included six podium placings, Inverness driver Newsham now hopes to be competitive at the top end of the field more regularly in the Speedworks Next Generation Touring Car Toyota Avensis.

The 45-year-old, who achieved two race wins in 2012, is delighted to have finally made the switch to the Cheshire-based team — a move that has been two years in the making.

"I have been negotiating with Christian Dick, team Principle of Speedworks for the last two seasons," said former Renault Clio Cup champion Newsham.

"We have a mutual respect for each other and have both wanted this to happen.

"He has assembled a fantastic team of people. Their workshops are what you would expect from a front-running BTCC team and they are in their third year of development of the NGTC car.

"With lots of winter testing planned, we should be able to tune the car to my liking reasonably quickly, then it will be a case of fine tuning for each circuit.

"This all adds up to a great opportunity for me, and I cannot wait to get started.

"Our aim has to be winning the independents title, nothing less will do."
