On the face of it, Andrew Findlater’s surprise selection for Scotland’s invitational team at the Dubai Sevens had the look of a pleasant mid-season jolly.
In reality, the thrill of competitive action in the United Arab Emirates may well have saved the Highland flanker’s rugby career.
Findlater, since recovering from two career-threatening cruciate ligament injuries, admits he has struggled to recapture a full appetite for the competitive fray.
Given the risks inherent in a third serious knee injury, there have been niggling thoughts of retirement, even amid a so far wonderful season for Highland as National Two newcomers.
The call to join the Projecx Waterboys squad, then, has proved timely. With the Scottish tourists winning the ‘Men’s International Social’ trophy, the psychological impact on Findlater has been considerable.
“The big thing I’ve probably taken from the trip is an extra bit of motivation,” the Kingussie High School technology teacher admitted.
