FORT William Football Club have swooped to land Ally Ewen as their new assistant manager.

And Calum Maclean’s right-hand man has set his immediate sights on avoiding the Highland League’s wooden spoon for a fourth successive season.

The 42-year-old joins the Highland League club after a successful period as boss of Muir of Ord Rovers where he led the team to six cup wins and a run of second and third-place finishes in the North Caledonian League.

Ewen’s career started as a youth player with Inverness Thistle and Ross County before switching disciplines to a promising rugby career playing for Boroughmuir before a serious injury finished his rugby career.

Returning to Inverness, Ewen played amateur football before moving to coaching and gaining numerous coaching qualifications. He is a senior manager with G and A Barnie Group.

Ewen told the LN: "I felt I perhaps had another season at the Muir left in me, but this was too good an opportunity to turn down.

"The job came about after Calum asked me to go down and help near the end of the season when they were playing Cove Rangers and I was asked back to assist at the Clach game.

"I was delighted to be offered the job. I have been pleasantly surprised by the talent at the club. Fort William have finished bottom in each of the last three seasons – that has to end. We have to get ahead of clubs such as Rothes and Strathspey.

"I have really enjoyed my time at Muir of Ord, but it’s good to have a go in the Highland League. I will be looking to attract players from the Inverness and Ross-shire areas. There are many players capable of making to step up to Highland League and hopefully Fort William can benefit."
