NATHAN Shaw says Billy Dodds sold him on a move to Caley Thistle by offering him a licence to thrill.

The former Blackpool and AFC Fylde wide man was told he will have freedom to attack defences at will as he makes the leap from England’s sixth tier to Scotland’s second.

Dodds spelled out his intentions and made his move on the 21-year-old after being alerted to the youngster’s promise by contacts in the game.

“I spoke to the gaffer and he told me his views on how he wanted to play football here. It’s an attractive way to play,” Shaw, who has impressed in friendlies and netted his first goal against Clach, said.

“He spoke about giving me the freedom to go forward and express myself, and that’s all I can ask as a forward player.

“I’m at ease on either side of the pitch – I don’t mind, left or right I feel comfortable.

“On the left, I’m better on the line, crossing into the box while on the right I’m cutting inside for a few more shots. It has been good to get off the mark with a goal in the pre-season games.

“It makes it easier going into the season knowing you’ve already put that stress behind you. Hopefully there will be many more.”

As well as aiming to excite the fans, Shaw is acutely aware of Caley Thistle’s Premiership ambitions, which were another influence on him making the move.

“It was a massive part for me, looking at last year when they were obviously unlucky in the play-offs.

“Hopefully, this year, we can go the full way and get promoted.

“I just saw this as a great opportunity to come and play. Hopefully I’ll play many games this season, get on the scoresheet and see where it takes us.

“We’ve seen a lot more players from England coming up here. The standard is good and it is a great platform for players.

“We’ll see how it goes. It’s an early start in the Premier Sports Cup, but I can’t wait.”
