Nairn County have lined up a glamour tie against American outfit Washington Huskies next month.

Nairn County have announced five friendlies in the build up to the new Highland League season.
Nairn County have announced five friendlies in the build up to the new Highland League season.

The Highland League club will face the team from the University of Washington at Station Park on Saturday, July 2.

Washington Huskies head coach Jamie Clark, who is the son of former Aberdeen goalkeeper Bobby Clark, is taking his team on a tour of Scotland this summer.

Director of football Graeme Macleod says it is a friendly which he thinks will capture the imagination of fans this summer.

"I believe Washington Huskies got in touch with ex-Banks O'Dee manager Gary Welsh, whose father George Welsh was the assistant manager of Nairn County when we won the Highland League in 1976," said Macleod.

"Gary would take his father to games at Nairn and is well known to us.

"Washington were looking for a match against a Highland League team and Gary put them in touch with ourselves and we are delighted to accommodate them.

"It is something a bit different when we are looking to get minutes into players legs and looking for teams that will be a good test during pre-season.

"Highland League teams like to play against full time clubs who might field under 20 or reserve teams and I would put Washington into that bracket.

"I think it is a game that will capture the imagination and it is something that we are excited about."

The match is one of five friendlies the club will play in the build up to the new Highland League season which is still to announce when it will start.

Nairn will also face New Elgin Juniors away on Tuesday, July 5, Forres Mechanics at home on Saturday, July 9, Forres Thistle away on Tuesday, July 12 and away to Clydebank on July 16.
