Nairn County striker Scott Davidson believes the club have a great chance to qualify for the second round of the Scottish Cup.

The striker has had a mixed start personally to the 2020/21 season, scoring a 25-yard screamer against Threave Rovers but missing a penalty against Fraserburgh.

It is still early in the campaign though, with those being the only two matches Nairn have played so far this season, and after calling the preliminary round win over Threave one of the most complete performances he has seen since signing for Nairn in January, Davidson is optimistic.

Broxburn Athletic await County in the first round on Saturday.

They went on a lengthy cup run last season, reaching the fourth round, and this season under pandemic conditions a cup run may be more important than ever.

That is exactly what Davidson is targeting for the team, but on an individual level he just wants to find the net as often as he can.

“The main thing was getting through to the first round, because it’s good for the club,” he said.

“With the tie that we got, we’ve got a great chance to get through again.

“I’ve got my own personal targets, but as a striker you want to be scoring in every single game you can.

“Against Threave, I probably should have had three or four and some of the other boys were the same, we could have scored more than four I think.

“As a striker, you want to be scoring in every game, so I won’t go far wrong with that.”

Above all, there is a sense of relief for Davidson that Nairn are simply playing football after such a turbulent year.

The beginning of Nairn’s competitive season was delayed when the squad had to isolate after a positive Covid-19 test was returned.

Thankfully for Wee County, football will continue despite the strengthened restrictions coming into force on Boxing Day, so further disruption to their season should be minimal – albeit without supporters in attendance for the time being.

Davidson is looking forward though, and hopes to give fans something to cheer about over the next few months.

“It has been a crazy year, I’m just glad that the season is going ahead,” he said.

“Hopefully it can be a good one for us.

“We had the Covid scare, that was horrible, but hopefully we’re past that now – although we won’t be the last team that suffers from it.”
