Nairn County’s ambitious rebuilding work continued tonight (Friday) as they won the race to land talented Clachnacuddin midfielder Ali Gillies.

The Station Park outfit, which has experienced a sharp upturn in fortunes under new manager Steven Mackay, agreed a deal to take the Merkinch mainstay across the derby divide.

In December 2021, Clach tied up the talented young midfielder on a deal through to summer 2023.

But with his current contract dwindling, the Inverness outfit risked losing Gillies under freedom of contract, with several top Highland clubs keen.

Nairn’s agreement on a deal through to summer 2025 is a blow to the Lilywhites, who saw the youngster become a near ever-present after breaking into the first team as a teenager.

Player-manager Steven Mackay said: “Ali is a player that I have admired for some time now.

“I’m delighted that we have been able to secure his signature despite some fierce competition from other clubs.

“He is only 21, but has played a lot of games in the Highland League and I believe that he has all the attributes to be a complete midfielder.

“I’m looking forward to working with him and watching him develop at our club.

“I’d like to thank Clach for making the process as seamless as possible to enable Ali to join us.”

The Wee County face Huntly at Station Park tomorrow, with super-veteran defender Ross Tokely back available after suspension.

The match will be dedicated to Nairn’s adopted charity TeamHamish, established in memory of young local lad Hamish Hey, who passed away in 2017 from cancer.

Nairn will be playing in their rainbow-coloured third kits with fans also asked to don colourful clothing.
