NAIRN Boxing Club duo Andrew Young and Robbie Johnstone are set to compete at the Boxing Scotland National Development Championships at Ravenscraig.

The pair are set to take on the top novice fighters in Scotland with around 600 fighters competing.

Young (34) from Nairn will be competing in the 67kg weight class.

Johnstone (11) from Alness will be competing in the 40kg weight class.

Nairn Boxing Club head coach Kevin Brooks says both fighters have what it takes to be successful at the tournament this weekend.

He said: “Andrew is in a tough group at the novices where there is a stacked weight class.

“But I’m confident he will do what he can and perform well.

“We think that Robbie can win gold as he is such a good boxer.

“I think he would have too much for most of his opponents.

“He has been training with Alness professional boxer Adian Williamson, he has developed a similar aggressive style in the ring.

“He can put pressure on his opponents and has become a cracking wee boxer. He has become Adian’s little robot. Adian is working with primary schools where he is inspiring kids to take up boxing.

He is already training like a professional and he is only 11-years-old and he has become a cracking talent.

“They have trained and worked hard and I have high hopes for both of them.”

Despite only being a young club, Nairn Boxing Club is attracting athletes from across the region.

Brooks says the club is in good place and with having quality athletes within their ranks, is expected for them to enjoy success in the near future.

“Some of our boxers are doing 100 mile round trips coming from as far as Alness and Helmsdale to train with us,” he said.

“We are a developing club and this should be the year that we hopefully win gold.”
