NAIRN Academy were the winners of the Highland schools team event at the ninth Highland Junior Golf Championships.

Over 40 young golfers took part in the tournament, which was held at the Spey Valley golf course in Aviemore.

The level of competition was strong, but it was Nairn Academy who emerged as the winners of the Highland schools team prize, finishing ahead of last year’s winners Thurso High School.

Andrew Burgess, Rory Asher and Alasdair Baird were the three counting Nairn Academy players, winning the Bruce Robertson Trophy with a net score of 222.

Marc Dingwall, of Forres Academy, won the Duncan Allan Quaich for recording the lowest boys scratch score of 73. Runner-up was Burgess with a 77.

Once again, the event was hosted and sponsored by Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort. Golf Management students from the Dornoch’s North Highland College Campus scored the event and the prizes were presented by Sandy Park, convener of Highland Council.

"It was a pleasure to witness the juniors take on the challenge of Spey Valley in testing conditions," said Park.

"I was greatly impressed by the standard of play and the winning scores of 73 for the boys and 78 for the girls shows there was golf of a high standard on show."

Murray Urquhart, PGA professional at Spey Valley, was another who was impressed by the talents of the junior players

"I am sure that the juniors enjoyed the course, which is in excellent condition, and presented a stern but fair test to all the competitors," he said.

"The scoring from the juniors continues to improve every year, testament to the excellent tuition and support provided throughout the Highlands."

The leading scores from the even were as follows:

Girls: Scratch — Eleanor Tunn (Thurso High) 78; Handicap — 1 Carinne Jay Taylor (Forres Academy) 88. Boys: Scratch — Marc Dingwall (Forres Academy) 73; Handicap (0-9) — Rory Asher (Nairn Academy) 73; Handicap (10-18) — Alasdair Baird (Nairn Academy) 73.

Highland School Team — 1 Nairn Academy 222; Moray Schools Team — Forres Academy 233.
