COLIN Montgomerie described conditions at Castle Stuart as "end of the world stuff" as rain threatened to completely wipe out the third day's play at the Barclays Scottish Open.

The Scot experienced severe wet weather when as captain of the triumphant European Ryder Cup team last year, play at Celtic Manor was brought to a standstill on the Sunday.

Montgomerie, however, was completely taken aback by the thunderstorms and torrential rain early on Saturday morning that waterlogged large parts of the links course and the surrounding areas.

"I don't think anyone in this part of the world has ever seen anything like this," said Montgomerie, who is one of many golfers in the field still waiting to complete their second round.

"I've not been out to see the course as we've been told it's too dangerous, but you have to say these really are freak conditions.

"I just feel very sorry for all the people who have worked so hard to put this tournament on. It's an incredible shame."
