ROSS County defender Jay McEveley is hoping that the character of the squad will help ignite a run of good results after the international break.

Ross County have failed to record a win since August and are currently sitting at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership Table with just 11 points .

One point currently separates the Staggies from Dundee, but only four points separate them from a top-six position.

A 1-1 draw against Glasgow giants Rangers will have given the squad some confidence heading into the break but they will be desperate to start their climb back up the league table.

County have now gone 10 games without a win, only racking up five victories since winning the Scottish League Cup in March.

But 31-year-old McEveley is hoping that the squad will use the international break as a chance to re-group and rest up before taking on St Johnstone a week on Saturday.

While he admits that the lack of wins is playing on the squads’ mind he is confident that they will be able to push on after the international break.

He said: “It does come into your head but we’ve got a good character in that team who know that we are doing the right things and if we can keep working hard things will turn for us.”

“We’ll keep ticking over, we’ve had a couple of international breaks already and we used that time wisely. We used the time training but we always used the time to rest up and get ourselves ready because we put a lot of energy into our games.

“We are a high pressing team, training is quite tough so we do need those rest days but we’ve got to work on things to move forward.

“It’s been the last four or five games really where we’ve shot ourselves in the foot a little bit, other teams have picked up points.”

County took on Rangers at the weekend, managing to claim a vital point from the game. After Rangers’ Clint Hill edged the away side in front, the Staggies answered with captain Andrew Davies equalising in the first half.

With neither side able to claim anything in the second half, the game ended at 1-1 with former Scotland international McEveley believing that things are now finally moving in the right direction.

He explained: “I think on another day we could have gone on and nicked the game, so there was lots of positives.

“We move forward obviously into a break now which we ideally didn’t want because we feel like we are getting ourselves back on track.

“I thought it was a good performance, exactly what we needed bouncing back from the Motherwell game.

“It just shows the character, we could have folded especially after the way results have gone over the last few weeks.”

McEveley joined the squad in June on a two-year deal. Originally from Liverpool, he was released at the end of last season by Sheffield United after spending two years with the Blades.

Having been in the Highlands for the last few months he is enjoying his time in Scotland.

He added: “I’m enjoying it, I’m settled up here. It’s a nice place to live and a nice place to work.

“Coming into a group that’s been together for a while sometimes it can be hard to bed in but there was four or five coming in at the same time.

“We all went away to Hungary pre-season and that helps. When you’re with each other 24/7 you get to know each other and you can move forward.”
