NEW Ross County signing Jay McEveley is ready to “kick on” and secure three points in the club’s second competitive game of the season against Raith Rovers this Saturday.

The former Sheffield United defender signed for the Staggies on a two-year contract last month.

Playing 42 times for the English League One club last season, the Liverpudlian also has three caps for Scotland behind him.

While the County pre-season has only been underway for two-and-a-half weeks, McEveley is keen to embrace the challenge of Scottish football having spent his time moving between English clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Derby County and Barnsley.

He said: “I’ve always watched the league from afar and obviously being involved with Scotland when I was younger, I had heard a lot of good things about the league and played with a lot of lads who had played up here as well.

“They’ve always spoke highly of the league and I just felt at the time I got the call it was the right time for me to go.

“I’ve been in England all my life and played across the leagues in England and I just wanted a fresh challenge really.

“I think Ross County have grown over the last four or five years, especially with the way they’ve worked themselves up into the top league and they’ve had a couple of successful years, a few cup signings, winning the cup last year, finishing in the top six – it’s a great achievement for the club.

“I don’t know if the gaffers finished in the market or not, but the squad we’ve got, the quality that I’ve seen on the training pitch and in the games, there’s no reason why we can’t achieve what we did last year and maybe push on further.”

The 31-year-old was given his first taste of life as a County player in the first round of the Betfred Cup against Montrose last Saturday.
