CAMMY Mackay will remain first choice goalkeeper for Inverness Caledonian Thistle as they prepare to face Ayr United in the Championship tomorrow.

Cammy Mackay will start at Somerset Park.
Cammy Mackay will start at Somerset Park.

Head coach Billy Dodds says he will keep faith with the 26-year-old after being impressed with his performances since former number one Mark Ridgers was originally out of the squad.

But Ridgers has had to be content with a place on the bench since returning to full fitness due to Mackay’s displays in-between the sticks.

At the start of the season, Dodds says he demanded Mackay proved why he was worth being considered a place in the starting 11.

He says that he deserves to keep the gloves and will start at Somerset Park.

“I wanted a challenge on Mark and I think Cammy has given that,” says Dodds.

“He is only 26 and he has got the stature to be a good goalkeeper.

“I asked him at the start of the season that I wanted him to really push and he has grabbed his chance so far.

“He has been brilliant for me. Against Raith Rovers, some people looked at him for conceding the first goal. “But when he came back and made the saves he did in the Dunfermline match, it shows he could handle it.

“I think really good goalkeepers can handle it, when you lose a goal like at Raith your confidence can go.

“But it didn’t and that is what I like from goalkeepers as they can make mistakes.

“It is how you handle them and Cammy has been sensational since he has come into the team.

“He has been different class, so he will be in goal on Saturday.”

Dodds says Mackay is growing in confidence but also Ridgers is showing in training why he deserves his spot back.

“Cammy is growing in confidence and it is good to see that healthy competition because Mark is a top goalkeeper and is pushing him.

“I am getting an edge off of Mark and Cammy and it is good to see as I want that competition throughout. I have been fair to them, and they both know it.
