STEVEN Mackay hit a second half hat-trick as Nairn County won 4-0 at Rothes in the Highland League on Wednesday night.

This was the second victory in five days for Nairn at Mackessack Park after their 4-1 weekend Foster’s Cup semi-final win against the Speysiders.

Les Fridge’s team didn’t grab the advantage, however, until early in the second half when captain David Hind pounced with a header to score his second goal of the month.

MacKay went on to hit three quickfire goals, including a sublime 20-yard shot, to push Nairn into eighth place in the table.

Nairn are on their travels once more on Saturday when they travel to Fraserburgh.

At the top of the table, Buckie Thistle are now two wins away from regaining the championship after a stunning 9-1 demolition job against visitors Fort William.

Martin Charlesworth hit a hat-trick for the Jags, with their other goals coming from Ian Murray (two), Lewis Mackinnon, Donnie Munro, Paul Napier and Craig MacMillan.

Fort had pulled the game level at 1-1 when Raymond Munro lobbed the ball over keeper Kevin Main.

Fort will be glad to see the back of Buckie, having lost 4-1 against them at Claggan Park on Saturday.

This weekend, Fort host third-place Keith, who are all but out of the title race after their 2-0 midweek defeat at Inverurie Locos.

The evening worsened for Fort when they heard Strathspey Thistle had beaten Wick Academy 3-2 at home to open up a four-point gap at the foot of the table.

In Wednesday’s other match, Cove Rangers moved into fifth spot after their 5-2 home win against Huntly.
