MEMBERS from Northern Counties Association clubs intending to enter the Scottish Women’s Golf Championship at Tain Golf Club next month are leaving it late.

The deadline for receipt of entry forms for the tournament, which takes place between 15-19th May, is noon on Monday and must be accompanied by the entry fee of £40.

Still to enter is the defending champion Louise Kenny (Pitreavie) and 2010 winner and Walker Cup reserve Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar).

So far, there has been only a small entry of 10 from the North — Lynne Fraser (Fortrose and Rosemarkie), Hannah McCook (Grantown-on-Spey), Margaret Bain and Susan MacIver (Gairloch), Cara Gruber, Fiona MacDonald and Pam Moscati (Royal Dornoch), Eleanor Tunn (Reay) and local pair Sammy Vass and Claire Ross.

MacDonald, in her final year at Stirling University, has shown signs that she is over her Curtis Cup omission when winning the women’s title in the Royal and Ancient Foundation Scholars golf tournament after two rounds over the Eden Course and a final 18 holes at The Old Course earlier this week.

It was MacDonald’s second success in the competition and she had two strokes to spare over fellow Stirling University student McCook after her final round 71 followed scores of 72 and 76 at the Eden. McCook’s scores were 75, 70 and 76.

"It was quite tough this week," said MacDonald, whose win will bring her a place in a professional Ladies European Tour event later in the season.

"I struggled on the greens on the Eden course and I struggled a wee bit on the Old Course, but hit the ball in really close with my approaches, which helped a lot"

Meanwhile, from the original starting line up of four Inverness junior golfers drawn in the first round of the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Boys Championship at Murcar this week, only Andrew Kenyon made it through to the next stage.

Kenyon overcame Robbie McCabe (Cawder) by two holes, but out went Craig Mackay and Kieran Mackay both by one hole, while Cameron Franssen had to withdraw even before the competition started.

Two Nairn teenagers, Craig Ram and Andrew Burgess, progressed through their first two ties.
