Cup action gets under way this weekend for the new shinty season as the MacTavish Cup opening round takes place.

Lovat will be the favourites to progress in their tie away at Kilmallie, who were relegated from the Premiership at the end of last season.

Still, it will not be easy as momentum is in the Lochaber side’s favour.

To date, Lovat have lost both of their league matches this year to last season’s MacTavish finalists, 3–1 to Caberfeidh and 2–0 at Kingussie.

Kilmallie meanwhile have scored five in back-to-back matches, first winning 5–2 away at Strathglass and then seeing off Inveraray 5–3 at home.

Elsewhere in the opening round draw, there is a repeat of last year’s final – and last weekend’s league match – between Caberfeidh and Kingussie at Castle Leod where the hosts will look to replicate their 3–0 triumph last time around.

Beauly have enjoyed their brief time as a top flight club so far, and will look to keep riding that wave away at National Division side Strathglass.

Elsewhere tomorrow’s first round fixtures are completed by a heavyweight battle between Kinlochshiel and Newtonmore, and Skye’s trip to Fort William.

The top league programmes are minimal, with only Oban Camanachd against Kyles Athletic in the Premiership and two National Division matches – Lochaber’s trip to Col Glen and Inveraray’s home game against Oban Celtic.

In the North Division One, though, it is business as usual.

Glengarry and Inverness are due to host Fort William and Newtonmore respectively, while Lovat go on the road to Kinlochshiel.

Skye are also due to make the trip to Kingussie.

In the North Division Two, Strathglass are at home against Lochaber – one of four matches on the calendar in that league.
