LIAM Polworth has been called up to the Scotland under-21 squad for the first time.

The Caley Thistle midfielder was named in head coach Ricky Sbragia's squad yesterday for the UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifiers with France and Northern Ireland on March 24 and March 29 respectively.

It is just reward for Polworth, who has forced himself into John Hughes' Inverness first team this season and made himself a regular in the side.

He will appear alongside fellow Invernessian Ryan Christie, now at Celtic.

After a frustrating 2014-15 campaign where he made just six starts, 21-year-old Polworth has made 32 appearances for his home-town club and could cap off an impressive campaign by making his first appearance for the national under-21 side.

He was a leading contender for the Premiership's young player of the month award for December, contributing four goals in three games to the Caley Jags' cause.

As a teenager, Polworth made appearances for the Scotland under-16 and under-17 sides, following his debut for Caley Thistle at the age of just 16 in May 2011.

He has also been offered a new three-year contract by the club this week, as Hughes seeks to shape his side for next season.
