With a possible Great Britain discus selection at stake in two weeks’ time, Kirsty Law will make a late decision about opening her 2020 season at tomorrow’s Loughborough Winter Throws Invitational.

The 33-year-old British Champion is set to fly to Leiria in Portugal for an open event next Saturday.

However there is another throws meeting at the same venue the following Saturday where Great Britain will be sending a team and Law is concerned that the outcome of tomorrow’s event at her home track could actually hinder her selection prospects.

“If I win at Loughborough and get a big throw, that would certainly help my chances of selection for the 21st and if I get it then I’d stay out in Portugal between the two events,” she said.

“But the problem is that the weather, especially the wind direction, in Loughborough hasn’t been good for throwing.

“So I’m worried about not getting a very good distance, even though I’m throwing OK.

“That might affect my chance of getting selected so there’s a case for not competing.

“The other problem is that there’s a new discus circle here and it’s too smooth to give grip.

“I’m worried that might not help either, so I’m going to leave it until the last minute.”

Scotland’s number one discus thrower for over a decade now, Commonwealth Games finalist Law says she is very pleased with her winter training.

She believes she is good shape going into this month.

“I’ve been throwing pretty long and my weights programme has also been going well,” she said.

“A lot of that hasn’t been hugely heavy.

“But it’s been pretty fast for power.

“For instance I’ve been doing fast sets of bench press at 70 kg.

“I’ve done a fair bit of single leg weights as well.

“So there will certainly be the one competition in Portugal on the 14th and we’ll see what the Great Britain selectors say about the 21st.”
