Inverness Caledonian Thistle threw away a two-goal lead as they ended up settling for a draw at Somerset Park.
After dominating the first 45 minutes with goals from Shane Sutherland and Logan Chalmers, Ayr pulled one back in the second half through Fraser Bryden.
Markus Fjortoft then equalised for Ayr 14 minutes from time as both teams shared the points.
Inverness took the lead after six minutes after a great passage of passing play, starting with Aaron Doran finding Billy Mckay on the right wing and ending in Shane Sutherland firing a low drive from six yards out.
Eight minutes later Inverness doubled their advantage as from the edge of the D, Chalmers hit a low cross from Aaron Doran first time straight into the top left corner.
Ayr United almost pulled one back right at the start of the second half, when Cammy Mackay produced an outstanding save to palm’s Fraser Bryden’s effort over the bar.
But the hosts did reduce the deficit to one after poor defending allowed Bryden to fire Daire O’Connor's cross into the net with a low drive.
Ayr pressed for an equaliser with Mackay doing well to stretch and grab a O'Connor low drive that was heading to the bottom left corner.
But Ayr levelled with 14 minutes left when Fjortoft beat the Inverness defence in the air to nod home Kerr McInroy's cross from the right wing into the net.
Both teams pressed for a winner but had to be content with a point each.
