Lovat, however, are safely into the last eight following their 6-0 home victory over Kilmory. Greg Matheson and Martin Bell both scored twice, while Lorne MacKay and Owen Ferguson were also on target.

Kilmallie are also through after beating Fort William 3-1 and rivals Lochaber ended Bute’s interest with a 4-0 victory, but Kyles and Glasgow Mid Argyll, as well as Kinlochshiel and Kingussie, will have to do it all over again after their respective matches ended 1-1.

Strathglass were gallant losers at the Winterton, going down 4-0 to Inveraray. A double by Chris Crawford and goals from Gary MacPherson and Rhuaridh Graham saw the Royal Burgh safely into the quarter-finals.

Newtonmore then killed the game with a devastating three-goal onslaught just after the hour mark. Sellar hit his second and Glen MacKintosh struck twice in quick succession to finish the match. John MacKenzie and Evan Menzies completed the scoring with two late goals.

With a spirited first half display, Beauly held Newtonmore to a stalemate. The floodgates, however, opened after the restart with Ackie MacRae finding the net in the 47th minute and Chris Sellar doubling ‘More’s lead two minutes later.

With half time approaching, Jordan Murchison applied the finish to give Skye the lead going into the second half. The Glen dominated for long spells after that, but were let down by poor finishing.

Neale Reid opened the scoring for the Glen in the 33rd minute, but it was back level a minute later when Alan Palmer equalised for the islanders.

Few would have given much for Beauly’s chances against holders Newtonmore and Strathglass were also expected to struggle against cup specialists Inveraray, but Glenurquhart’s 2-1 defeat by Skye was the shock of the day.

It was also the second round of the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup on Saturday, but it was a fairly disastrous day for the local clubs involved as Beauly, Glenurquhart and Strathglass were each dumped out of the competition.

The hosts paid dearly after the break as Caberfeidh, making full use of the wind and the extra man, pulled away to win convincingly with Stuart Kzryzanowski hitting a double and Calum Morrison striking in the 78th minute to complete the scoring.

Inverness were even given a penalty, but could not convert, Connor Golabek seeing his spot hit saved by Caber’s goalkeeper Donald Mellis.

With the strong wind at their backs, Inverness enjoyed the bulk of possession after that but could not pierce a stubborn Cabers defence where 17-year-old Stephen MacPhail, making his debut, was outstanding.

Kevin Bartlett fired the visitors into the lead in the second minute, but Daniel Palombo levelled just 12 minutes later.

If it is to be MacDougall and Munro’s last match in charge on Saturday, then it was not the send-off they would have hoped for as Caberfeidh triumphed 4-1 — a result which moves them to the top of the league.

"I have huge respect for the players and everyone else at the club and I wish them every success. Steve and I will remain on the committee and will help out where we can, but neither of us is able any longer to give the huge commitment the post demands."

"There is no doubt the squad is better equipped to move to the next level than it was when we took over in 2008.

"We have had four great years and in that time we have experienced a few lows, but also some real highs.

"Maybe we have become a bit stale and the introduction of new ideas could take the club to a higher level.

"After the defeat at Beauly, Steve and myself decided that the club would benefit from a change at the top and with eleven matches left before the end of the season, the time is right to hand over to someone else.

"That’s probably it as far we are concerned" said plant hire boss MacDougall who was speaking from the club’s training ground where he was assisting with a Sunday morning coaching session for primary school children.

MacDougall confirmed that the duo were unlikely to take charge of any future matches, but that they would stay around to aid the transition to a new management team.

The match itself may prove to be the last one for their management team of James MacDougall and Steve Munro, who had informed Inverness in midweek that they intended resigning their positions.

The Highland Capital club have refused to make any comment on the matter other than saying that they are waiting to read the match official’s views, which were expected to be discussed at last night’s weekly meeting.

Inverness officials and players were angered that MacDonald was not given even a yellow card for his part and referee Calum Duff’s decision provoked a strong reaction from both the dugout and supporters.

Trouble flared just after the interval when referee Calum Duff red carded Inverness midfielder Davie Glass for retaliation after he had reacted to a late tackle by Martin MacDonald.

INVERNESS will await the referee’s report before deciding if they are to ask the Camanachd Association to investigate an incident involving players and officials at Saturday’s North Division One match between Inverness and Caberfeidh.
