WEIGHTLIFTERS from Inverness showed their strength when they took home a huge medal haul from a major competition.

Inverness Olympic Weightlifting Club powered their way to claim eight medals at the Winter Cup in Broxburn.

The club sent down a squad of 12 weightlifters who competed in a number of categories during the event.

They returned north with two winners as Matej Papp and Karen Saint won their respective categories to claim gold medals.

Head coach Jordan Bowie also put in an impressive performance at the Winter Cup as he claimed a silver medal in his category after finishing second.

The club also claimed five bronze medals, with Dawn Chessor, Neve Mackenzie, Rob Scobbie, Amber Salter and Klaudia Zbikowska all earning a place on the podium in the respective categories.

Head coach Jordan Bowie said it was a terrific performance from everyone at the club in what was their first competition on the road this year.

“With the season just starting, this was the first competition of the year that we had taken part in,” he said.

“We took 12 weightlifters to the competition who won eight medals in total.

“Going into the competition, we weren’t sure how it was going to go for us beforehand.

“However, everyone who competed for the club at the Winter Cup were amazing and I was delighted with how we all did.”

Inverness Olympic Weightlifting Club were only established back in April, but are already making a big impression due to their recent success.

Since being established, Bowie says they have attracted people of all abilities who are all looking to get involved in the sport as well as improve their strength.

“The club is all about the community aspect,” said Bowie.

“We are all about helping them achieve what they are capable of.

“At present we have around 20 members at the club.

“We have experienced weightlifters to members who had never weightlifted before. They like being able to push themselves to new targets as well as the friendly team atmosphere as reasons they enjoy it.”

Inverness Olympic Weightlifting Club are now preparing for their next competition which will be the Western District Championship that is taking place in Glasgow.
