Inverness Harriers athlete David McColl claimed victory at the Caithness Half Marathon.

He came out on top at the 13.1-mile circuit which followed quiet roads from Watten, which completed a loop of Loch Watten.

The event – organised by North Highland Harriers (NHH) – saw McColl win in a time of 1 hour 19 minutes, 57 seconds. David said it was the first time he had won a race.

He was followed by Paul Corbett, who finished second in 1.21:30 and Darren Oag, of NHH, in 1.22:32.

The women’s race was won by NHH’s Marianne Wilson, who was 10th overall in 1.37:14. Second was Jayne Klimas, in 1.42:29 and Fiona Stewart was third in 1.45:36.

Jennifer Bremner took the female veteran’s over 50 prize in a time of 1.48:45, while the male veteran over 50 prize went to Michael Sutherland, who was fifth overall in 1.28:54.

The Caithness Half Marathon is one of a series of local events run by NHH and it returned to the calendar last year after an absence during the pandemic. The number of entrants was up from around 40 last year.

This year’s race was sponsored by Abbott Risk Consulting.

Simon Harrison, from race organisers NHH, said: “We were delighted to see the number of competitors was well up on last year. We were lucky to get a cooler day after the hot weather last week, and the excellent conditions for running resulted in many excellent times.

“It was also heartening to see a good turnout of local runners who had never taken part in a running event before, and also those runners travelling from outside the county – we really appreciate their support.

“Finally, a big thank you to all of our volunteer marshals.”
