INVERNESS Golf Club member Alister Henry emerged as the winner of Monty’s Monthly Medal when the finals of local club medal winners from all over Scotland was played over The Carrick on Loch Lomond golf course earlier this week.

Five handicapper Henry beat off stiff competition with his excellent stableford card of 35 points in the season-long event that has raised thousands of pounds for the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation set up by Colin Montgomerie in honour of his mother. The Foundation works and helps families affected by cancer.

In conjunction with the Scottish Men’s and Ladies Golf Unions, as well as support from Aberdeen Asset Management, all golf clubs in Scotland were invited, for an additional entry fee of £3 from each competitor, to allow the leading scorers from their own monthly medals to attend the Scottish final at Loch Lomond alongside Montgomerie.

All the finalists were given the opportunity to play the par three 16th hole with the victorious Ryder Cup captain and on the day Henry had the additional thrill of not only beating Monty, but also out-driving women’s European Tour player Kylie Walker, who as affiliated touring pro at the host venue, put out a challenge to beat her drive at the 12th hole.

"It was great to see so many golfers from all parts of Scotland, from as far north as Inverness and south to Dumfries-shire, supporting the inaugural event and helping to raise money for the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation," said Montgomerie.

"I really enjoyed meeting all the players and spending time with them and hopefully they will encourage others to take part next year."
