ALLAN Macleod, currently in charge of Inverness’ reserve side, is emerging as a strong candidate to take over as first-team manager after the unexpected departure of Callum McLeod last week.

The city club are refusing to comment on rumours circulating at the weekend that MacLeod will be in charge of the senior side at the start of the new season, which starts in less than three weeks time.

Inverness president Peter Gow said that all applications for the post will be considered at tonight’s weekly committee meeting and that an announcement is expected later in the week.

A turbulent week for the club ended on a sad note with the passing of Henry MacEwan, one of two surviving members of the club’s 1952 Camanachd Cup-winning team.

MacEwan, who was 88, played wing centre when the club recorded their first and only triumph in shinty’s premier event.

On retiring from the sport, MacEwan, who was a native of Inverness, entered the Mod and in his first year in the competition won the coveted learner’s award.

Meanwhile, Strathglass came back empty-handed from the long trip to face Oban Celtic with the greens scoring late on to grab a 3-2 victory.

With silverware in the shape of the Robert Wylie Trophy up for grabs, this was not a run of the mill pre-season friendly and the competitive nature of the game was an ideal platform for Strath’s new boss Calum Duff to assess his new charges.

Josh Fraser and Robert Geddes were on target for Strathglass, but two goals by Celtic in the final 20 minutes meant they slipped to a narrow defeat.

There was better news for the Strath, however, in Sunday’s reserve team friendly when they trounced a young Inverness side 6-0 at Cannich

Lovat were also on the road as they travelled to Dalmally to face South Division One side Glenorchy. It proved a worthwhile experience for the Balgate side as they came away with a 3 - 0 victory with brothers Greg and Jamie Matheson on target.

Glenurquhart emerged from their close season to see off Division One side Beauly, beating them 1-0 at Blairbeg with Fraser Heath hitting the winner. The Glen’s reserve side were also victorious as they defeated Boleskine 2-1.

In other pre-season encounters, Caberfeidh drew 2-2 against Kingussie, Kilmallie overcame Kinlochshiel 2-0, Fort William thrashed Skye 7-1, Lochbroom edged out Lewis 3-1 and Beauly reserves emerged as 2-1 winners over Lochaber.
