Inverness Caledonian Thistle finished their disappointing Viaplay Cup group stage campaign with defeat at Dundee.

Dundee broke the deadlock midway through the second half through Zack Robinson which was enough to give the hosts victory.

But it wasn't enough for Dundee to progress into the last 16 as they needed to win by two clear goals to finish as one of the best runners-up to progress to the next round.

Caley Thistle finished fourth in the group with just one win from their four matches.

A 2-1 win against Bonnyrigg rose was followed by a 2-1 loss at Dumbarton and 3-2 defeat to Airdrieonians at the Caledonian Stadium.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle made six changes to the team that lost to Airdrieonians and killed off their Viaplay Cup campaign for this season.

Jake Davidson, Wallace Duffy, Cameron Harper, Lewis Hyde, Mark Ridgers and Austin Samuels all came in to the starting line-up.

Aaron Doran, Luis Longstaff and Cameron MacKay were relegated to the bench, with Danny Devine, Luis Longstaff and Lewis Nicolson all out.

New signing Harry Lodovica was also named on the bench as the club confirmed the forward had agreed a one-year deal.

Inverness survived an early scare when Scott Tiffoney's cross into the six yard box found Diego Pineda who connected unchallenged, but saw his shot hit the crossbar.

But Inverness had the better chances in the first half, with Billy Mckay getting on the end of a Nathan Shaw cross forcing Jon McCracken into a fine save as he parried the ball out for a corner.

Shaw was also enjoying plenty of space on the left wing in the first half and had a great chance with 10 minutes of the first half left when he saw his shot go wide of the right post.

Dundee did break the deadlock midway through the second half when Robinson got on the end of a cross eight yards from goal.

His header was parried on to the underside crossbar by Ridgers and thought it was cleared. But the linesman ruled it was over the line and the referee gave the goal.

Dundee pressed for a second goal which would have taken them into the last 16 but were unable to score again.
