INVERNESS Athletic will look to put their disappointing North Caledonian League campaign behind them when they start their North Caledonian Cup bid against St Duthus in the first round tomorrow at Fort George.

Inverness Athletic won their first game of the season.
Inverness Athletic won their first game of the season.

Athletic are three points adrift at the bottom of the table with only one league win to their name all season.

But they came from behind to draw 2–2 with league champions Golspie Sutherland at Fort George last week.

Athletic have avoided defeat against Golspie in all three meetings this season and pushed title contenders Invergordon close in a 2–1 defeat the week previously.

Athletic manager Jason Golabek says his team have shown improvement as the season has gone on and is now targeting a run in the North Caledonian Cup.

“I would like to get a good run in the cup competition and I think that it would be good for the players too,” said Golabek.

“It is something different from the league and it would be great to get a win for a boost.

“We’ve only had one win in the league all season which is hard to believe when you look at our performances, but that is the way it has gone this season.”

He added: “It is one of those seasons.

But we have another chance on Saturday against St Duthus who we haven’t had much luck against this season.

“They are a very experienced team and full of confidence with their good results recently.

“But we are certainly going to have a go at them anyway.”

Golabek says he is going to stick with the same starting 11 that drew with Golspie Sutherland last weekend, saying they all merited keeping their place in the first team.

“I will hopefully have the same starting line up I had against Golspie,” confirmed Golabek.

“They all deserve another crack at it as every one of them was outstanding.”
