MEGAN Keith has been crowned under-23 European Cross Country Champion after claiming victory with a record breaking margin in Belgium today.

The 21-year-old from Inverness proved too good for the chasing pack as she won the title in Brussels by 83 seconds.

The previous best ever winning margin at the championships was 39 seconds.

Keith added the under-23 gold to the title she won at under-20 level two years ago along with her under-23 title she won last year.

Speaking to Athletics Weekly, she said she was delighted with her performance.

"I had to think on my feet," she said

I knew you could pay the price if you went too hard to run on a course like that.

"I was intending to run a relaxed first few laps and work on from there.

"I rejigged my plan and worked hard on the middle lap and enjoyed the last one.

"It was trying to separate the speed your legs work at and brain works at.

"I was happy I could have my legs working that quickly but at the same time have my brain relaxed enough that I could figure out what the best game plan was so I am happy with that."
