Highland Wildcats’ players can look forward to a 2021 season after their fixture list was confirmed.
For the slightly older junior group, it is all change – there will be no Britbowl this year, and instead of the usual league they will play tournaments against other Scottish sides.
That is a format more familiar to the youth squad, who kick off their season in Edinburgh on July 24.
Like most, the Wildcats have been hit by the pandemic.
Many players saw their last year wiped out, while development officer Robbie Paulin has not been able to recruit in schools as extensively as he would like.
“Ones that normally wouldn’t be in this situation in a normal year are suddenly at the top of the age band and the most experienced players,” Paulin, also the youth squad’s head coach, explained.
“Getting these guys to try and promote it through word of mouth and encourage others to come along is our main way of getting people involved at the moment.
“I’ve been really impressed with their enthusiasm, and how much they have taken that on board and stepped up to the challenge.
“We’re basically not charging this season to reduce barriers to playing.
“The only thing we’re going to be asking for is a contribution for the bus, and they have a BAFA joining fee, but we want to get as many people involved as we can.”
Dawn Macleod, parent of Wildcats player Ronan, added: “Aside from the fitness benefits, he is learning new skills in a team environment.
“It has helped him become more disciplined and responsible due to the structure and autonomy given to players for their own learning and progress.
“The supportive team environment helps to build confidence and self-esteem whilst making new friends.”
Head coach of the junior side, Ally Gibson, remains optimistic about the season despite the challenges though.
“This team we currently have at 19 and under is one of great years of experience under their belt, players who have competed at the highest levels of American football in Britain,” Gibson said.
“We have players who have played for the Great Britain team, and one currently in the NFL academy which is a tremendous milestone.
“I can safely say, we are looking very well prepared for the season coming.”
