Wallace Duffy expects tomorrow’s match between Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ayr United to have plenty of bite with both teams fighting for points at either end of the table.

Caley Thistle are in the hunt for promotion, and though it would take a significant turnaround in fortunes for the teams ahead of them in the table to win the title, they are in a good position to seal a play-off place.

Tomorrow they travel to Ayr United, who will be desperate for three points of their own as they are still not safe from relegation.

The Honest Men sit third bottom of the Championship, but are still mathematically within reach of both Queen of the South and Dunfermline below them.

So with plenty riding on this weekend’s match at Somerset Park for both teams, Duffy expects the importance of a result to be clear to see from both teams.

“There have been a lot of goals in the games between us this season,” Duffy said.

“We’re always confident going into a game – we believe we can beat any team in the league.

“Off the back of three wins, we’re confident that we can go and put in the performances that we know we are capable of. They’re in a relegation battle, but they have won some big games, so they will be up for it too.

“Nobody wants to get relegated, and everyone wants to get promoted.

“For us, we’re trying to get promoted and Ayr are maybe saying they are not getting relegated this season, so there’s a bit more needle, and a bit more of an edge to it which always makes for a good game.”

Caley Thistle have a mixed record against Ayr so far this season – winning one, drawing one and losing one.

The teams’ recent form, however, would favour Inverness. Recent victories over Arbroath, Raith Rovers and Dunfermline significantly eclipse Ayr’s four matches without a win.

ICT will not be taking anything for granted according to Duffy, though.

Winning records, or the stakes involved, will not be coming into the equation, with the defender expecting business as usual at the club.

“We always just try and prepare the same for every game,” the 22-year-old reasoned.

“Maybe subconsciously people know that it’s going to be a bit more of a battle, there will be a bit more pressure, but the gaffer always tries to keep us calm.

“We try to focus on every game the same as every other one, so I’m sure the gaffer will be telling us that leading up to the game.”
